The Arizona State University Horizon Project was established in 1989 as an extracurricular activity to facilitate undergraduate students' participation in national intercollegiate design competitions. Its mission is to enhance the academic experience with a "hands-on-real-world" experience in product development from design to functioning prototype. In the past, three cars have been designed, built, and raced: the Sun Devil Cruiser, the Desert Ray, and the Solar Phoenix. These cars have raced in competitions both in the United States and Japan. They have been raced thousands of miles. To date more than 400 undergraduate students have contributed tens of thousands of hours of labor towards the design, fabrication, testing, and racing of these vehicles. Currently the team is in the design and manufacturing process of the new generation of solar race vehicle at Arizona State. The team's goal is to start from the ground up to form a car that aids in the research and development to produce alternative fueled vehicles. Other technologies that the team research and develop for improvements of electric vehicles are the control systems, data acquisition, photovoltaic research, energy storage systems, aerodynamics, materials, and structures. Student Benefits Real world competitive engineering experience in an academic setting Enhancement of engineering skills Team environment work experience Experience in engineering design, fabrication, testing, implementation, etc. Increased level of academic interactions for team members Increased pride and confidence in educational achievements Potential employment opportunities for graduates Make potential business contacts and experience Society Benefits Graduates with new paradigms in transportation technologies Facilitates economic development using new technologies Enhanced development of zero emission technologies for a cleaner environment |
